Abstract

A phenomenological theory of time dependent fluctuations above order-disorder critical temperatures is presented. The theory combines Landau's treatment of critical fluctuations with an assumed kinetic equation for the fluctuations of the order parameter. The critical exponents associated with the energy spectrum of inelastically scattered neutrons, nuclear magnetic resonance linewidths, as well as ultrasonic attenuation and velocity changes are related. In particular, the role of nonlinearities in the ultrasonic velocity changes has been investigated.
