Abstract
Among the natural fibres, wool from sheep is one of the oldest textile fibres used by mankind. The invention of man-made fibres dominated the wool market and minimalized the importance of wool in the textile industry by years. Nowadays, even though the main aim of sheep husbandry is meat production; various breeds of modern sheep produce a wide range of fine and coarse wool fibres for apparel fabrics and interior textiles, respectively. Besides, over the last decades, remarkable improvements in wool production in terms of yield and quality have been achieved. In recent years, different attempts for utilization of poor quality wool fibres and wool wastes were also considered. Wool fibres having enhanced functional properties and technical performances with finishing technologies have the potential to use in various technical textiles. Considering these developments and new applications of wool, physical and chemical properties of wool fibre and wool production technologies still maintain its importance for the textile industry. This chapter discusses the recent innovations in wool fibres and applications.
