Abstract

Cotton is a rapidly renewable, natural agricultural product. World cotton production exploded from 13.8 million tons in the 1980s to 27 million tons in 2018. Current cotton picking around the world ranges from completely handpicking to completely mechanical, whereas ginning is completely mechanical. Cotton fibre development, the submicroscopic structure of the secondary wall and the main system in the world for classifying and grading cotton are described in this chapter. Cotton fibre quality properties, fibre weathering, moisture absorption, sticky cotton fibre testing and yarn formation (i.e., spinning preparation) and the six main spinning systems and yarn structures are also reviewed. The last part deals with a study of the cotton fabric manufacturing system, “woven fabrics, terry towel and knitting fabrics'. The principles of fabric testing are also mentioned in this chapter.
