Abstract

This chapter examines in detail the link between the military and the environment, a core barrier that has been traditionally overlooked in the global environmental discourse. This chapter looks at the expanse of the military industry, and then analyzes the role of the military industry as it relates to sustainability. This chapter examines the impacts of the military on the environment, both in times of peace and war. This chapter analyzes the environmental impacts of military upkeep and military training, and those of weapons production and testing. This chapter also discusses the human dimensions of war, examining the loss of lives, the disruption of daily human existence, and the loss of one’s home. Finally, this chapter analyzes the implications of war for sustainability, and the current status of the legal landscape for humanitarian and environmental protection in times of war.
