Abstract

This chapter makes the case for why participation in IEAs is a necessary precursor for global sustainability. This chapter discusses the concept of our common vulnerabilities, and analyzes the importance of participation in IEAs as a core mechanism to address global environmental problems to enhance global sustainability. This chapter also discusses global environmental change (GEC), and three aspects which are of concern to scientists—namely, the scale, pace of change, and the agency of GEC. This chapter also discusses the nature of global environmental problems, addressing their interconnectedness, close interdependence, and synergies. This also discusses the territorial and spatial permeability of global environmental problems through two environmental disasters: The Bhopal industrial tragedy, and the Chernobyl accident.
