Abstract

This chapter discusses tools that are commonly found on the home desktop. It explains solutions for connecting Palm or Pocket PC handheld devices to the Linux desktop and mechanisms to synchronize PDA's data. It particularly, emphasizes on synchronizing photographs and documents-to-go files with the PDA. Furthermore the chapter reviews accounting programs and digital camera solutions. Synchronizing Palm OS device with Linux becomes simple if pilot support for desktop is available, and mail client and pilot-link are installed. RHEL is the common program generally used to synchronize a Palm device with Linux. Synchronizing documents-to-go data from the Palm device to the Linux desktop has become much simpler after the release of documents-to-go 6. Nowadays, documents-to-go can read and write raw word files, which implies that the .doc files can be placed on the Palm device simply without being concerned about translation. The script uses par tool which converts files to the appropriate streamed data mode. These simple conversions allow Microsoft word, excel, and photos to be synchronized to the Palm device's main memory.
