Abstract

This chapter explores methods for connecting to the corporate LAN using Linux. It also discusses the necessary software components required to implement virtual private network (VPN). Point to Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) method requires adding modules to the kernel and a specialized setup using pptpconfig and other necessary system modifications in order to implement the PPTP protocol. It is noted that the Gentoo version of Linux contains the necessary tools to use PPTP. IPSec (IP Secure) method uses the Openswan package to implement the IPSec stack and to connect to an Openswan server on the corporate network. The implementation of Openswan is similar across most Linux distributions. There are dollar costs and support costs associated with using these tools. The dollar costs are related to the purchase of hardware and the necessary software to implement VPN. The software cost varies for different systems. There are few major support issues when using VPN tools on Linux such as recompilation of kernel for NAT-T support, which can void the warranty of the system.
