Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of stainless steel. The types of stainless steel used in ANSI systems are 304, 304L, 316, and 316L. The “L” designation is for a low-carbon content in the steel. Wall thickness and weights are different for stainless schedule 5S, 10S, 40S, and 80S on sizes of 12 ins. and smaller. Trademark, type of material, size, pressure rating, and bore are identification markings of stainless steel fittings. Extra care is given to stainless steel pipe during the entire cycle of receipt, storage, fabrication, and shipment. Stainless steel items are marked with identification code numbers and color code scheme is used. Magnet test and chemical test are done to identify the stainless steel.
