Abstract

This chapter explores monensin, the principal component of the complex of four closely related antibiotics produced by Streptomyces cinnamonensis, which may be used to prevent coccidiosis in chickens. The chickens are given prophylactic doses of monensin by incorporating it in their feed at 110 gm/ton. The high energy feeds used by the broiler producers contain from 5 to 10% fat, which interferes with determination of monension. The following were design goals of the turbidimetric assay: (1) a simple method of sample preparation, (2) freedom from bias, and (3) high accuracy. The large number of samples to be assayed makes simple and easy sample preparation highly desirable. The ideal method would be extraction with a fat solvent followed by dilution to assay concentration.
