Abstract

This chapter discusses tylosin, which is a macrolide antibiotic used to treat animal diseases or to improve feed efficiency. The phosphate salt of tylosin is used in feeds, and the tartrate is used to prepare solutions that are either injected into the animal or placed in its drinking water. The method of preparing a feed sample for assay has been greatly improved, and the AUTOTURB System has been applied to tylosin assays. These two innovations increased speed and accuracy of assays. The assay measures from 1.25 to 4 μg of tylosin per ml in the sample solution prepared for the AUTOTURB Diluter. The high potency samples include solutions of tylosin base, tylosin tartrate, and premixes for feeds. Tylosin occurs in feeds at levels ranging from 5 to 800 gm/ton. Materials extracted from the feeds may increase or decrease growth rate of the test organism and cause a bias in the potency. A simple treatment was devised to reduce such biases.
