Abstract

Black cohosh (Actaea racemosa/Cimicifuga racemose) is a medicinal herb with mixed research findings regarding its use for relieving menopausal symptoms. Although it may not be all that beneficial for hut flushes, black cohosh is safe and has other beneficial properties including dopaminergic, noradrenergic, serotonergic, and GABAergic effects. Clinical research indicates that black cohosh, alone or in combination formulas, may be beneficial for uterine fibroids, female infertility, menopause, bone density, anxiety in menopause, and breast cancer. This chapter examines some of the scientific research conducted on black cohosh, both alone and in combination formulas, for treating numerous health conditions. It summarizes results from several human studies of the herb’s use in treating disorders of the breasts, ovaries, and uterus, as well as musculoskeletal and oncologic disorders. Finally, the chapter presents a list of black cohosh’s active constituents, different Commonly Used Preparations and Dosage, and a section on “Safety and Precaution” that examines side effects, toxicity, and disease and drug interactions.
