Abstract

Umckaloabo (Pelargonium sidoides) is a plant native to South Africa. Preclinical research on umckaloabo has focused on antimicrobial and immunostimulatory effects and mucociliary transport. It is likely the best herb for bronchitis, as it improves not only the cough but also the other symptoms that tend to accompany an episode of acute bronchitis such as headache, fever, fatigue, and rhinorrhea, most likely due to its efficacy against the underlying pathophysiology of bronchitis. It may be beneficial for reactive airways, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, upper respiratory infections, pharyngitis, acute sinusitis, acute bronchitis, and immune function. This chapter examines some of the scientific research conducted on umckaloabo, both alone and in combination formulas, for treating numerous health conditions. It summarizes results from several human studies of umckaloabo’s use in treating pulmonary, infectious, and immune disorders. Finally, the chapter presents a list of umckaloabo’s Active Constituents, different Commonly Used Preparations and Dosage, and a Section on “Safety and Precaution” that examines side effects, toxicity, and disease and drug interactions.
