Abstract

There are two kinds of stray current sources: manmade, related to man's activity, and those of natural origin. Manmade sources include electrified railways, rails of mining operations, cathodic protection systems, underground and underwater high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmissions lines, welding units, solar, and wind farms; all are considered in this chapter. Features of stray current sources of natural origin include lightning and telluric current, which are also reviewed.
