Abstract

Mature spermatids released from the seminiferous tubules complete, as sperm, a maturation process in the epididymal duct consisting of the acquisition of forward motility, essential for eventual fertilization. Secretions from the epididymal duct, combined mainly with additional products of the prostate and seminal vesicles, contribute to the maturation and viability of the male gamete. This chapter starts by reviewing the major developmental steps of the gonads and the excurrent (efferent) ducts. This review leads to an understanding of the histology, function and clinical significance of the pathway followed by male and female gametes in the pursuit of fertilization.
