Abstract

Remote Installation Services consists of different technologies that all work together and perform different tasks at different times. Remote Installation Services displays itself as a single server service in Windows Server 2003, and as a collection of services in Windows 2000 Server. Remote Installation Services depends on several other services and components to run such as Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) Server, Trivial File Transfer Protocol (TFTP), and Boot Information Negotiation Layer. TFTP is used to transfer data files to the Remote Installation Services client. TFTP is a little similar to File Transfer Protocol (FTP), a protocol that transfers files from one computer to another. Operating System Chooser (OSC) files are displayed when starting a client installation from Remote Installation Services. By default, the standard OSC files display a number of DOS-style screens, which prompt a user for input prior to installing a client computer. OSC files are written in a simple code called OSChooser Markup Language (OSCML), which is similar to HTML version.
