Abstract

This chapter discusses how to install and configure Remote Installation Services.. The configuration of Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), unattended installation of Remote Installation Services server images, and standard Setup Information File (SIF) are also explained. Before installing a Remote Installation Services server, all prerequisites must be in place so the process can continue uploading the first Remote Installation Services image. After installing the first image, understanding the process and verifying the Remote Installation Services server are very important. Before the first image can be deployed, minor modifications must be made to the standard SIF. The DHCP server must be installed, authenticated, and configured for the network topology. One must manually install DHCP services and configure scopes and options at either server level or scope level. The authentication of DHCP server is a new function that was introduced with Microsoft Windows 2000 server. This mechanism will automatically query Active Directory for a list of authenticated DHCP servers. If the server is not on the list, the DHCP server will automatically close the DHCP services and thereby not respond to client requests for an IP address.
