Abstract

This chapter explores the possibilities of configuring a client installation using the answer file. The Setup Information File (SIF) is the basic building block of deploying a client installation using Remote Installation Services. The SIF is used to configure a client installation in several ways: OEM drivers are defined, GUIRunOnce commands are defined, general settings for the image are defined, and components can be selected or deselected from the image. The SIF is located in the RemoteInstall\\Setup\\[Language]\\Images\\[Friendly name of image]\\I386\\Templates folder. This is the default location of the file, and whenever an image is added to the Remote Installation Services server, a default SIF will be written to this location below the image in question. The SIF is divided into sections. Each section contains entries defining different characteristics and settings, which are applied to the image. One of the sections—Unattended section—contains a huge amount of keys and values that control how the computer handles tasks that would normally require user attention during installation.
