Abstract
There is an increased emphasis on reducing the amount of animal testing. There are still many unanswered questions regarding wound healing, skin cancer and other cutaneous diseases. The use of skin substitutes and skin models in wound healing research is growing, in part, due to the need to reduce animal testing. This chapter starts with a brief overview of wound healing and the body's response to insult from either an injury or an implant. Different skin substitutes and their clinical uses are then discussed, be they based on natural or synthetic dermal matrices.
