Abstract
Activated protein C (APC) stimulates matrix metalloproteinase-2 activity, proliferation, and migration and prevents apoptosis in endothelial cells and epidermal keratinocytes, all vital processes of angiogenesis and epithelialization. Chronic wounds are a significant problem and common cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. They necessitate frequent visits to the outpatient departments for wound dressings and care. In addition, patients have to deal with malodorous dressings and in more severe cases require hospitalization for surgical procedures, amputation, or life-threatening cellulitis. Initial clinical tests with topical APC were promising in the treatment of chronic wounds of different etiologies. We have patents covering the use of APC for topical chronic wound therapy. APC is set to heal and help prevent the complications of recalcitrant wounds.
