Abstract

The application of nanomaterials in various materials has gained significant attention due to their unique effects on material properties and their ability to impart novel functionality to materials. With the increasing focus on sustainability and developing low-cost eco-friendly alternatives, the synthesis of nanoparticles from naturally available clay minerals has gained huge interest in recent years. This chapter provides an overview of the research and development of nanoclay composites in the areas of bioimplants and epoxies. The structure, morphology, and properties of nanoclays such as montmorillonite, kaolinite, and halloysite and how they are utilized for composite developments in biomaterials and epoxies are reviewed. The different mechanisms of interaction of nanoclay reinforcement particles with the matrix material and their influence on the physical, chemical, and mechanical properties of composite materials are mentioned. The effect of nanoclays on biocompatibility, the application of layered nanoclay minerals for targeted drug delivery, the influence of nanoclay on the mechanical properties, and the thermal stability of epoxies are also discussed in this chapter. The scope of future research and the challenges in nanoclay composite developments have been mentioned in this chapter.
