Abstract

This chapter discusses the functions of industrial ventilation. The purpose of ventilation is usually either to help keep the occupants cool or to reduce the concentration of an inhaled contaminant. The dispersion and removal of hot or contaminated air take place through air movement induced by convection currents, wind forces, fans, the motion of machinery, and ventilation purposely introduced. The prevention of adverse effects is accomplished by controlling ventilation so that the heat stress or the concentration of the contaminants in the air is kept below a certain level that conforms to the corresponding hygiene standard. The required quantity of ventilation and the manner of its distribution to maintain air quality standards depend first on the rates of heat and contaminant emission. It is then necessary to determine how heat and air contaminants are introduced into the atmosphere and then to add fresh air to dilute and remove them.
