Abstract
This chapter discusses the basic aspects of data communication and networking that are relevant in automation. Networks are discussed with media, topology, components, data transmission, and signal transmission. Data communication protocols, hardware and software connectivity, protocol standards, protocol layers, and interprocess communication and connectivity with examples of open platform communications (OPC) and OPC unified architecture are discussed in detail. The chapter ends with a brief discussion on cyber security, safe and redundant networks.
