Abstract
This chapter introduces the industry names for data acquisition and control units (DACUs) optimized for applications in localized and distributed processes. DACUs for localized processes are programmable logic controllers, loop controllers, and controllers whereas for distributed processes it is a remote terminal unit. Apart from these, there are other variations such as PC-based, programmable automation, field programmable gate array/field-programmable analog array-based, and embedded-based controllers, which are briefly described here.
