Abstract

Carpets whether machine made or handmade are subjected to chemical treatments to improve their look, lustre, and aesthetic value. Silk and nylon carpets are bright in appearance and are given a shampoo wash for removing dirt, oil stains, etc., whereas woollen carpets are given rigorous chemical wash for improving lustre and removing dirt, loose fibres, and oil stains. Chemical wash generates effluents which need to be treated before disposal. Eco-friendly processing and finishing of carpets, banned amines, and Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation, and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) regulations context are discussed in the chapter to promote eco-awareness. Application of digital printing including inkjet technology in carpet has also been described.
