Abstract

Fat grafting has become one of the most commonly performed procedures by plastic surgeons because of its unique versatility in soft tissue remodeling and potential in reconstructive and aesthetic surgery. Over the past decade, fat grafting has become increasingly used to improve facial aesthetic or craniofacial contour abnormalities ranging from traumatic to congenital deformities, in both the pediatric and adult population. Fat is an ideal filler given its biocompatibility, ease of harvest, and regenerative properties. A plethora of studies have explored all facets of fat grafting from harvesting to injection technique. However, the surgeon should be mindful of the current literature to optimize adipocyte survival and graft retention. This book chapter explores the current key topics and up-to-date literature on the biology of fat grafting and optimal fat grafting technique.
