Abstract

Aromatic polyimide (PI) is considered to be one of the most useful superengineering plastics because of its excellent thermal stability, chemical resistance, mechanical properties, and low dielectric constant. In recent years, several types of silica/PI nanocomposites have been reported in the literature. In this chapter, preparation and properties of silica/PI nanocomposites by the sol-gel process and in situ polymerization process are introduced. The effect of coupling agent, preparation process, and nanofiller content on the structural, mechanical, and thermal properties of the composite films is discussed. The results reveal that the overall performance of PI can be enhanced by incorporation of silica nanofillers.
