Abstract

A wide variety of bites are seen in children. It is estimated that more than 1 million children are treated annually for bites. Much of the data on the incidence of infections and value of treatments is based on case series and retrospective studies that lack randomization and are biased based on the minority of patients who seek treatment for their bites. In this chapter, we concentrate on bites of interest to the surgeon from dogs, cats, spiders and snakes. Presentation, clinical management and outcomes are discussed, in addition to a discussion on tetanus and rabies prophylaxis.
