Abstract

This chapter deals with one of the important natural fibres i.e. silk. The chapter emphasizes on the silkworm rearing, cocoon production and types of silk. The properties of silk fibres such as tensile behaviour, optical properties, viscoelastic behaviour and thermal properties are discussed in detail. In addition, the structure of silk fibre such as crystal structure, morphology, etc. is discussed. A brief introduction is presented on the current status of silk industry and its future growth. Silk reeling operations, types of reeling machines, silk throwing and fabric production details are also presented. Being a natural silk fibre, silk has number of applications in different fields and these applications are discussed in detail. At the end, future trends in silk production with respect to the production in various silk producing countries, new avenues of applications of silk, new products of silk, etc. are discussed to enrich the reader with latest trends in silk production.
