Abstract
: This chapter deals with one of the important natural fibres: silk. The chapter focuses on silkworm rearing, cocoon production and different types of silk. The properties of silk fibres such as tensile behaviour, optical properties, visco-elastic behaviour and thermal properties are discussed in detail. In addition, the structure of silk fibre (for example crystal structure and morphology) is discussed. A brief introduction is presented on the current status of the silk industry and its future growth. Silk reeling operations, types of reeling machines, silk throwing and fabric production details are also presented. Being a natural fibre, silk has number of applications in different fields and these applications are discussed in detail. The concluding part of the chapter discusses future trends in silk production with respect to production in various countries, and new avenues of applications of silk are discussed to inform the reader about the latest trends in silk production.
