Abstract

This chapter discusses commands for using the 3D function of AutoCAD. As a prerequisite, a user should be familiar with the usual AutoCAD 2D drafting process. The 3D drawings can be exported to other software where coloring and shading of faces can be done. The process of drawing a 3D object in AutoCAD consists of drawing a 2D shape on the ground and telling AutoCAD how high to make the object. The plan view is then extruded to this height. Thus, any shape can be drawn in the x, y plane as in normal 2D draughting having first specified the z dimension. To understand the viewpoint concept, it is necessary to imagine another set of x, y, and z axes. AutoCAD also allows the removal of hidden lines once the viewpoint is selected. This hidden line removal can be a lengthy process with a complex drawing, so when the command HIDE is selected, confirmation is asked for.
