Abstract

This chapter discusses social and cultural imperatives. Despite the collective image, Asia internally contains an enormous amount of cultural tension that spills over to political and economic areas. As a result, the quantum of tension increases with every year. The critical effort to recognize, locates, and comprehends national and subnational strivings is of very special concern in the context of the dynamics of growth. It is this effort, when translated into regional programs and policies that must be governed by the impulses of self-reliant expression. It is a passion that may not be immediately visible. Indeed, it may well be heavily covered over by the intense activities of rather imitative ruling elites. However, it is bound to surface and impact political, economic, and social growth, because it is a deep cultural need in the communities of Asia.
