Abstract

This chapter focuses on the five Asian states, namely, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand, belonging to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). With a total population of 250 million and a land area of 3,050,000 square kilometres, they form nearly three-fourths of the Southeast Asian population and occupy slightly more than two-thirds of the region's land area. All the five countries have important trading, investment, financial, shipping, communication, aviation, and educational ties with the advanced industrial nations. They trade mainly with industrial countries. Their economies are basically oriented toward those of the United States, Japan, and the European Economic Community. Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand are classified by the World Bank as belonging to the developing middle income countries; while Indonesia, in terms of per capita income, is shown among the most affluent of the low income countries.
