Abstract
This chapter presents the research background and some basic knowledge of progressive collapse. Firstly, several iconic collapse events are shown to help readers understand the essential characteristics of such damage. And based on which, the definition of progressive collapse is illustrated in detail. Subsequently, the mainstream codes and guidelines regarding progressive collapse design are summarized and some important design requirements are also presented. Then, special attention is paid to explain the two mainstream design approaches named as indirect and direct design approaches against progressive collapse. Finally, the research status of progressive collapse is briefly summarized and the purpose of this book is stated.
