Abstract

Establishing a professional brand begins with an assessment of your reputation as an employee. Your brand is associated with both your professional image and your topic of interest. Begin by formulating a personal mission statement that identifies your library philosophy. This will help you identify issues in the profession that you are passionate about, and which you will build your brand upon. Take your personal interests and hobbies into consideration when framing your mission statement and philosophy, as librarianship often encompasses a larger world view that accommodates outside subjects. Find a unique perspective on a standard topic. Look at your daily work, as well as your department and workplace settings, and hone in on what inspires you. Then create a project that solves a problem, establishes a service, or creates efficiency, for example. As you relate your passion to a project, and network with likeminded professionals, your name will begin to be associated with that topic and your brand will be established.
