Abstract
This chapter presents classification, terminology, and definitions of automatic control system. The chapter describes automatic control systems in which the functions alluded to so far are implemented by hardware, with the function of the human operator reduced to the task of establishing desired values, or goals, for the automatic systems. Automatic control systems may be classified in many different ways and are as follows: (1) open loop versus closed loop continuous control, (2) classification by type of plant being controlled, (3) classification by type of process variable being controlled, (4) servomechanisms versus regulators, (5) classification by type of control signals being employed, (6) analog, digital, and hybrid control elements, (7) linear versus nonlinear continuous control systems, (8) single versus multiple loop continuous control systems, and (9) sequence control systems versus continuous control systems. Systems that employ feedback data are termed closed loop control systems. With closed loop action, there is the potential for considerably improved quality of control compared with open loop action.
