Abstract

This chapter discusses the different types and use of AutoCAD software and hardware. As a general rule, drawings created in earlier versions of AutoCAD will load into later versions but the reverse is not possible. AutoCAD markets an educational version of the program that is identical to the full version, but it will not save or plot drawings. Versions later than 2.18 require a hardware lock or dongle to be installed in the back of the computer to run. This is an antipiracy device. Release 9 requires an additional chip to be present in the computer—called a math coprocessor. This speeds up the calculations involved. It was previously an optional extra but is now obligatory. AutoCAD runs on the IBM PC family of computers, and this includes the IBM PC XT, the IBM PC AT, the IBM PS/2 range, and most clones of these machines. A minimum specification of 640 Kb internal RAM and a hard disk is necessary to run AutoCAD.
