Abstract

This study sought to confirm the supply and status of Korean content by examining the supply by country of all content supplied by the top four OTTs in the U.S. market. Through the processing and analysis of data collected in March 2023 via 'Just Watch’, it was revealed that there are differences between broadcast channel-owned OTT platforms with a substantial library of existing popular content and broadcast channel-independent OTT platforms that were proactive in original content production and overseas content acquisition. These differences were observed in terms of the total number of content titles and the distribution of content by country or region. The supply of Korean content also varied significantly among different OTT platforms, Netflix was standing out as a significant provider of the latest Korean content. This study confirmed the reality of Korean content that is inevitably dependent on the operational strategies of global OTTs, and suggested that in order for Korean content to truly secure global competitiveness, it is necessary to diversify overseas distribution centered on domestic platforms and foster a sustainable creative ecosystem.
