Abstract

In this study, the cultural center translation strategy was analyzed using the Chinese drama “Bobo Gyeongsim” based on time slip to examine how to effectively translate Korean-Chinese cultural centers in situations such as time and space constraints of subtitle translation and entertainment constraints of dramas. As a result of the study, it was analyzed that some social cultural centers, including proper nouns, focused on preservation strategies centered on starting text because it is not easy to replace in TL culture as a unique cultural center in SL culture, and at the same time, “alternative” or “abbreviation” was used to generalize the original cultural center. In the translation of idioms, a “alternative” pattern appeared, and in the translation of cultural vocabulary, a “cultural alternative translation strategy” that replaces cultural centers was used as a core due to cultural gaps. In order to translate drama subtitles that can satisfy viewers of the “TL culture”, translators must have an accurate understanding of the “SL Cultural Center” and be able to use translation strategies suitable for the situation.
