Abstract
The purpose of the article is to analyze the history of the creation of the 6th Orel Rifle Division and its participation in wars and armed conflicts in the period 1918-1941. Special attention is paid to the events of summer and winter in 1941. The author studies the circumstances of the division combat activity in the Border Battle, the Battle of Smolensk, the Battle for Moscow, the Yelets-Livensky offensive operation. The key event that determined the fate of the Orel Rifle Division in the Great Patriotic War is the battles in the Brest Fortress area in June 1941. As a result of the research, the author draws the conclusion that there is a relationship between the high level of combat readiness of the division and the quality of training of its command staff on the eve and at the initial stage of the Great Patriotic War.
