Abstract

This study was carried out to examine the current situation of teaching 16th-century fourpart counterpoint in college music education of Korea which is one of the important subjects for music major college students, by means of a questionnaire. According the outcome of the questionnaire survey, it was shown that while the four-part counterpoint lesson was satisfactorily presented for students majoring in composition, students other than composition majors did not move well forward up to the four-part counterpoint. In this study, therefore, the following methods are suggested to facilitate the lesson of four-part counterpoint; 1.
Increasing teaching hours. 2. Using a class divided into small groups so that the professor can provide immediate feedback on the outcome of individual students. 3. Carefully planning a syllabus for students to achieve their goals. 4. Causing students to access to the music literature in four or more-parts and enjoy the beauty in the art.
