Abstract

The purpose of this study is to clarify the differences and similarities between Korean and Myanmar language by contrasting ‘up-down’ metaphor expressions. In this study, the orientational metaphor of conceptual metaphor theory which is based on everyday experience, physical experience and socio-cultural experience. In Korean and Myanmar Language, ‘up-down’ metaphor was contrasted in terms of criteria, age, status, position in writing, geographical location, quantity, evaluation, emotion, sphere of influence and consciousness. It can be seen that there is universality in the process of conceptualization of ‘up-down’ metaphor in both language. And there is relativity in the language expression when conceptualized from the perspective of criteria and age. In Korean, up-down metaphor used as a direct expression but in Myanmar. it used as a specific expression. So, this paper can help to understand the similarities and differences between languages and cultures. And it can be an important resource for helping korean learners and for using metaphors correctly.
