Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to critically review the existing researches on science and engineering writing, focusing on the necessity of 'specialized science and engineering freshman writing', and to arouse the need for 'more in-depth research and corresponding learning' through it. The order of writing for this purpose is as follows. First, existing researches on science and engineering writing will be critically reviewed, focusing on specialized freshmen writing. Through this, if the research on writing for freshmen in science and engineering is toward academic writing, based on the consideration of the basics of academic writing in general or the consideration of the contact point with academic writing in the humanities and social sciences, it will be argued that it is needed to 'break away from the obsession with instrumental writing'. At the end, three suggestions related to the research and learning of writing for freshmen in science and engineering will be presented.
