Abstract

This study proposes a novel method for acquiring cultural vocabulary through movies and analyzes learners’ attitudes and perceptions toward this method. The instructional procedure involved preparation, cultural vocabulary learning, and a concluding phase. The effectiveness of this movie-based learning approach was determined through two achievement tests. The results indicated that learning cultural vocabulary through movies had a positive impact on learners' acquisition of such vocabulary. Furthermore, an open-ended questionnaire was administered to investigate learners’ feedback and practical opinions regarding using movies for learning English cultural vocabulary. The survey revealed that a substantial majority of learners (80%) expressed satisfaction with cultural vocabulary learning, citing reasons such as the perceived utility of cultural learning, the capability to broaden cultural knowledge, and the relevance of cultural learning in today’s globalized world. An integrated approach that combines language and culture learning through movies should be pursued in second language instruction.
