Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of operating learning community programs in many colleges on participating students’ competency of conscientiousness. To this end, the study conducted pre- and post-surveys of college students who participated in the programs, and analyzed the responses of 77 students who answered both pre- and post-surveys. According to the results of the analysis, participants in the learning community programs showed a 0.19 point higher competency of conscientiousness than that of non-participants. The p-value of the analysis showed a statistically significant result at 0.007 Also, as for the sub-factors of conscientiousness, that is, self-control and performance abilities, the results of the post-survey were 0.21 and 0.23 point, respectively, higher than those of the pre-survey. Their p-values showed statistically significant results at 0.003 and 0.005, respectively. This is to say that the learning community programs were instrumental in developing students’ competency of conscientiousness. To maintain this effect of the learning community programs, the study suggests that the programs be operated from quantitative aspects. In other words, schools need to strengthen management or feedback from the perspective of operators rather than simply expanding the learning community programs to increase quantitative performance by increasing the number of programs and participants in the programs.
