Abstract

This study was aimed to musical analyze the status and early film Themes of Paik Young ho. This study analyzed 38 film scores by year and collaboration musicians. This study focused on investigating the structural, melodic, rhythmic, and formal characteristics of the 37 scores, as well as the relationship between lyrics and melody. This results revealed that Paik composed scores for 38 themes in 21 films and collaborated with numerous figures from popular arts. At this time, elements such as the 7-tone scale, sequential progressions of major 2nd intervals, triads, and choral songs reflected the trends in Korean popular music. However, the characteristics of Paik's film themes during this period were marked by high pitches and wide vocal ranges, frequent jumps of 4th intervals, abrupt leaps of 7th to 10th intervals, intentionally used irregularities, and distinctive compositional techniques. The intensified film score activities during this period continued and led to Paik's musical prime, marked by “Dongbaek Agassi.”
