Abstract

The study aims to illustrate the discrepancies and redundancy in the terminological apparatus of pedagogy in the context of understanding the notion of ‘intercultural competence’. The paper clarifies the definitional characteristics of the terms related to intercultural competence: intercultural communicative competence, sociocultural competence, existential competence, linguocultural competence, strategic competence. The scientific novelty of the paper lies in providing arguments in favor of the expediency of considering the notion of ‘intercultural competence’ in the universal and special meanings, the latter being determined by a particular target audience. As a result, the notion of ‘the intercultural competence of foreign students in the multicultural educational environment of the university’ is actualized, its content is revealed.
