Abstract

The purpose of the article is to study the embodiment of the Anima archetype in A. S. Dargomyzhsky’s opera “Mermaid”. In the theory of C. G. Jung this archetype is associated with the erotic-emotional manifestation of the unconscious beginning of the male personality; it appears in the image of the opposite sex and symbolizes the initial ordering beginning. The use of analytical observations in this perspective helps to look differently both on the dramaturgy of the opera and on the interpretation of its central female character, which can be regarded as a particular manifestation of the Anima archetype in musical art.
