Abstract

The purpose of the article is to study certain issues of the development of Schism and Sectarianism in Orel province in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The paper focuses on the causes, motives, localization of such distribution, the relationship between different communities. Based on the analysis of the materials of the Missionary Review and the Orel Diocesan Gazette, the authors emphasize that the most energetic and influential people were at the head of the schismatics and sectarians. The phenomenon of popularity of various sects and interpretations among resi-dents of the Orel province was due to both internal (the search for truth-seeking, dissatisfaction with everyday life) and external factors (changes in political, social or economic life, poverty, physical disabilities, old age). As a result, the authors draw the conclusion that schismatics and sectarians were both very fanatical and intolerant, and more lenient and compliant towards the Orthodox Church and its clergy depending on the place of residence.
