Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to understand the characteristics and meaning of Juksan-ma and Jukan-ma(hand-made horses for the state funeral of Joseon Dynasty), of Cheongsuan-ma and Jasuan-ma(ritual horses for the state funeral of Joseon Dynasty). The reason is that more specific discussion was needed them, because they had a symbolic meaning related to the king's death and authority. First. in Chapter 2, the connection between the thoughts of horses and the death of powerful man was examined, as well as the funeral equipage. In Chapter 3, I researched the concept and making method, quantity, arrangement, and coloring of Juksan-ma and Jukan-ma, Cheongsuan-ma and Jasuan-ma through the Joseon dynasty ritual books, texts and paintings of uigwe(records of the state funeral). As a result, the meanings of them were as follows; These were a key medium through which the spirit of the deceased king could be completely separated from the body and rise, as well as a visual symbol for displaying it.
