Abstract

The article is devoted to the issues of communicative competence and speech culture of future specialists in the maritime industry. The specifics of work in the maritime transport system, which belongs to the most dynamic and advantageous sectors of the international economy, is analyzed. The essence of the maritime industry structure is revealed. The functions of specialists whose professional activity is related to the maritime industry, maritime transport system and operation of seaports are outlined. The necessity for the cadets of maritime academies to possess communicative competence (understood as a set of knowledge about the rules and regulations of professional communication) is emphasized. It is noted that communicative competence is a factor of vital importance for the successful implementation of professional activities. Attention is drawn to the fact that knowledge of state and foreign languages, knowledge of the communication culture determines the level of professionalism, on which not only the successful completion of production tasks, but also human life depends. The rules of communication at sea, which make the communication effective (use of simple and short sentences, clear articulation, correct use of grammatical rules, etc.) are singled out. Problems of the formation of professional speech culture are outlined (lack of ability to correctly understand information, to prepare and transmit it in the process of professional communication; inability to clearly describe the situation; insufficient knowledge of grammar, vocabulary, phraseology; slow and difficult perception of foreign language; lack of speech practice in English). The requirements for the professional speech culture are determined. It is emphasized that there is a necessity for providing the maritime industry, in particular the merchant fleet, with specialists who are not only good at using English for specific purposes in the process of communication, but also possess communicative competence, which is the key to effective professional activity.
